Scientific Program:

Registration:

The registration fee is $250 until March 1, 2001 and $300 thereafter. Checks should be made payable to "PASCOS 2001" and mailed to: Marie Englund, Department of Physics and Astronomy, CB#3255, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC27599-3255, USA. Registration becomes official upon receipt of the check.

Participation may be restricted to 200 official registrants because of the size of the lecture hall. In the Registration Form, registrants can express their interest in presenting a ten-minute parallel talk (see below) together with the proposed title and a brief abstract.

The invited plenary speakers should use the Registration Form to indicate the final title of their lecture.

Purpose:

Three subfields of theoretical high-energy physics are particle phenomenology, string theory and theoretical cosmology. At the start of a new millennium these fields show an unprecedented and exciting amount of mutual dependence and interaction.

The purpose of PASCOS 2001 is to bring together researchers in these disciplines and to foster informal discussions and the exploration of new ideas.

Accommodations:

The conference hotel is the Carolina Inn. One hundred rooms in the Carolina Inn are held on a first-come first-served basis. Participants must make reservations directly with the Inn. The telephone number is: (919) 933 2001. Early reservation at the Carolina Inn is recommended, because it is the most convenient and its space is limited. The nightly rate at the Carolina Inn for this meeting is $129; please mention PASCOS 2001 to receive this special reduction.

Travel Information:

The nearest airport is Raleigh-Durham (RDU) International Airport, approximately 15 miles from Chapel Hill. If staying at the Carolina Inn, a rental car is not recommended - take a taxi-cab from RDU to the Carolina Inn, Chapel Hill. For the return to RDU airport the Carolina Inn has a convenient and inexpensive limousine service which can be reserved at the front desk.

Alternative Accommodations:

There are alternative accommodations in the vicinity of the Carolina Inn. A list of hotels with telephone number, lowest nightly rate, approximate distance to the Carolina Inn, and webpage for more information:

Comments on hotels: For its price, La Quinta is new, comfortable and highly recommended. Only Fearrington House is more luxurious than the Carolina Inn. Siena is a nearby luxury hotel. Holiday Inn and Best Western are around average for the respective hotel chains.

Plenary Talks:

There will be approximately 36 plenary talks, each of 45 minutes duration with an additional 5 minutes for questions. The majority of the plenary speakers are listed above. Roughly a third of the talks will be devoted to each of the PASCOS topics: particle phenomenology, string theory and cosmology. These presentations will take place in the Hill Ballroom of the Carolina Inn.

The Scientific Program will be available on this webpage several weeks prior to the PASCOS 2001 symposium.

Parallel Sessions:

On Tuesday April 10 and Thursday April 12 there will be an evening session from 8pm to 11pm of 10 minute talks. The number of such parallel sessions is yet to be determined by the demand. If a registrant wishes to present a ten-minute contribution it should be indicated on the Registration Form, including title and a brief abstract of up to 75 words. These presentations will take place in the Hill Ballroom of the Carolina Inn.

Reception:

A welcoming reception will take place, with a cash bar, in the Hill Ballroom South of the Carolina Inn from 6pm to 10pm on Monday April 9, 2001.

The banquet is included in the registration fee for participants. Additional guests may be accommodated for an extra charge of $50 per person.

Proceedings:

The proceedings of PASCOS 2001 will be published as a book by Rinton Press.

Poetic Touch:

The novelist Thomas Wolfe, author of Look Homeward Angel, was an alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and wrote a poem which is felicitous for PASCOS 2001.

Sometimes when the Springtime comes,

And the sifting moonlight falls -

They'll think again of this night here

And these old brown walls,

Of white old well, and of old South

With bells deep booming tone,

They'll think again of Chapel Hill and -

Thinking - come back home -
