Held Monday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. in 215 Phillips Hall, these talks are meant to be of general interest to all faculty and students in physics and astronomy. An online version of this year's schedule is available. Tea, coffee, and cookies are served at 3:00 p.m. in 215 Phillips Hall.
The Department and others on and off campus organize seminars that cover topics of special interest.
Astronomy Journal Club
Once a week faculty and students gather to hear about and discuss a recent article (or more) of special interest. The Astronomy Journal Club meets in Phillips 258 at 1 p.m. every Friday, and all are welcome. The talks are very informal. The Club offers a list of scheduled talks.
Astrophysics Research Seminar
The seminar meets in the lounge from 4-6pm on select Fridays (typically 3rd Fridays), with a 1-hour visitor talk or two 1/2-hour internal talks followed by a social hour with refreshments.
Condensed Matter Seminars
Topics of current excitement are presented Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. in 258 Phillips Hall. The schedule is updated regularly.
Gravity, Cosmology, and High Energy Physics (GCHEP)
Weekly GCHEP seminars are held tuesdays at 3:30pm. Please consult the GCHEP
webpage for more information and for a list of current, past and future
speakers. Talks cover some of the latest new ideas and forefront research
carried out in the field.
High Energy Physics
Topics in particle phenomenology, cosmology, and string theory are discussed Wednesdays at 12:00pm in 258 Phillips Hall.
Neurobiology Journal Club
The UNC Physics Neurobiology Journal Club meets Monday nights at 7:00 pm.
Nuclear Physics
Three different seminars series are available. The Department Nuclear Physics Seminar is held Mondays at 3:00 p.m. in 258 Phillips, and covers talks of interest to both faculty and students.
The Triangle Nuclear Theory (TNT) covers topics of theoretical interest in nuclear physics.
A separate seminar series is also held at TUNL on the Duke campus. The TUNL Seminars involves students and faculty from UNC, Duke, and NC State.
Particle Astrophysics Journal Club (at TUNL)
The Particle Astrophysics Journal Club meets every other Tuesday at noon in the TUNL reading room. This location may change in the future. Topics discussed include Particle Astrophysis, Dark Matter, Dark Energy, Cosmology, and Neutrino Physics, among others.
String Theory
UNC and Duke co-host the UNC-Duke String Theory Seminar where advanced topics relevant to mathematical physics and string theory are discussed.
Other UNC Departments
Other departments offering colloquium programs include:
