Application Procedure
Our application deadline for initial Fall semester
enrollment is December 15. In practice, this means we begin
reviewing all completed applications in late December, or as soon
thereafter as they are complete. We do not actually refuse later
applications. They simply have a decreasing chance, the later they arrive,
for consideration for admission and for full financial aid. Our
application process remains formally open until our class is full. For
more information, please see our Frequently Asked
Questions.
Applications are handled by UNC's Graduate School.
Detailed instructions for all domestic and international student
applicants can be found here. In
addition to the explicit application requirements listed there, we do
require the GRE Subject Test in Physics. We also require a statement of
purpose. In your statement, you should explain how you became interested
in physics and/or astronomy, what your specific academic interests are,
and describe, if you know them, your long-range career plans for which you
would use your physics training.
International applicants should send a financial certificate directly to
the Department of Physics and Astronomy, CB #3255, Chapel Hill, NC 27599.
On-line applications are preferred, but forms may be downloaded
for paper submission if desired. The method of submitting an
application will not influence its evaluation, though electronic forms are
often handled more quickly both by the Graduate School and by the
Department.
E-mail questions about any aspect of this application process,
or more generally about any part of our entire graduate program, should be
directed to our Graduate Admissions Coordinator at g-admit@physics.unc.edu.
