Physics Degree Requirements - B.A. Track

I. Preliminaries: 3-semester introductory sequence of mechanics, electricity & magnetism, relativity, and quantum mechanics: PHYS 116(026), 117(027), 128(028), 128L(028L).

II. Required Classes:

  • Mechanics, electricity & magnetism: PHYS 201(052) or 301(103), 211(058) or 311(107).

III. Plus an additional course chosen from:

  • Any physics course numbered above 200, excluding any laboratory course
  • Introduction to Numerical Techniques in Physics, PHYS 331(PHYS 061).

IV. Plus an additional 5 courses to satisfy one of 3 areas of concentration:

BA standard option

  • Introductory chemistry CHEM 101/101L (CHEM 011/011L), CHEM 102/102L (CHEM 021/021L)
  • 1 more course from Step III.
  • 2 more courses from Step III. or from:
    • Observational astronomy ASTR 519 (ASTR 137)
    • Astrophysics I ASTR 501(ASTR 142)
    • Astrophysics II ASTR 502(ASTR 143)

BA astronomy option

  • Introductory astronomy ASTR 101/101L (ASTR 31/31L)
  • Cosmic evolution ASTR 301 (ASTR 117)
  • Observational astronomy ASTR 519(ASTR 137)
  • Astrophysics I ASTR 501 (ASTR 142)
  • Astrophysics II ASTR 502 (ASTR 143)

BA geophysics option

  • Introductory chemistry CHEM 101/101L (CHEM 011/011L), CHEM 102/102L (CHEM 021/021L)
  • 1 more course from Step III.
  • 2 courses from:
    • Physics of the Earth's Interior PHYS 422(PHYS 122)
    • Geophysics GEOL 515 (GEOL 142)
