Physics Degree Requirements - B.S. Track

I. Preliminaries: 3-semester introductory sequence of mechanics, electricity & magnetism, relativity, and quantum mechanics PHYS 116 (PHYS 26), PHYS 117 (PHYS 27), PHYS 128 (PHYS 28), PHYS 128L (PHYS 28L). MATH 231-233 (MATH 31-33) (calculus I-III) and MATH 383 (MATH 83) (linear algebra and differential equations). CHEM 101/101L (CHEM 11/11L) and CHEM 102/102L (CHEM 21/21L) (general descriptive chemistry).

II. Required Classes:

  • Mechanics I PHYS 301 (PHYS 103)
  • Electricity & magnetism I and II PHYS 311, 312 (PHYS 107,108)
  • Numerical techniques PHYS 331 (PHYS 61)
  • Electronics PHYS 351 (PHYS 101)
  • Math methods 2 of PHYS 631, 632 (PHYS 191, 192) or MATH 528, 529 (MATH 128, 129)
  • Thermodynamics PHYS 341 (PHYS 105)
  • Advanced laboratory PHYS 481L, 482L (PHYS 142L, 143L)
  • Quantum mechanics and applications PHYS 321, 521 (PHYS 160, 163)

III. Plus an additional 2 electives chosen from:

  • Any physics or astronomy course numbered above 300
  • Independent research PHYS 295, 395 (PHYS 91/92), ASTR 291, 391 (ASTR 91/92)
