This report will consist of three mutually reinforcing parts: 1. the physical model, 2. the write-up and 3. the class presentation. This will require organization within each group. How you divide chores within the groups is up to you. I would prefer everyone have a hand in each part but obviously some folks will concentrate more on one part than another. Though I will be giving you several class periods to work on the project in the lab, you will certainly need at least equal time (probably more) out of class collaborating with your team mates to properly prepare your full project. Once your team decides on a model, you all need to immediately begin collecting resources to educate yourselves on your subject. I am going to require that each project use at least 10 resources, 5 of which must be scholarly (textbooks, journal articles etc.). Share these resources. All team members should read all resources. This is where you’re learning something. The success of your project will depend entirely on how seriously you take educating yourself on your subject. Read a lot and chose your resources wisely (ask for my advice if you wish) . Guidelines for write-up (5-6 pages single spaced) Each team will turn in one write-up (each model project will have a single write-up that is turned into me). This will be a collaborative effort by all team members. Your write-up should include (at the very least) the following sections A. A scientific synopsis of the system you are modeling. That is, the science behind the model. This will include both a general context of the system (why is it important, what is it related to, what are its implications), as well as scientific details relevant to the model (a diagram or picture of your system with parts labeled along with descriptions in text). You can use graphics from the web for this as long as they are properly cited. Make sure you describe and clearly indicate the scale of your system. IMPORTANT: within this write-up, some comments should be made as to how this system is relevant to nanoscience/nanotechnology. The emphasis of your write-up should be nano oriented. Come ask me what I mean by this if it is not entirely clear. B. Clear description of your model. In this section you will present you model. You will describe: 1. what you are modeling (that is what particular aspects of the nanosystem you described in the first section that you have modeled), 2. the materials you used and why you chose them 3. Pictures of your model. These could include some record of different stages of building as well as good clear pictures of your final model. You should take several pictures of your final model from different angles so you have everything you’ll need to work with on your write-up. The pictures of you model could even include commentary, arrows, etc. that help in the description. A diagram of you model might be helpful as well. The 5-6 page guideline presupposes that at least 4 pages are solid text. You will definitely need several figures in your write-up but the majority of the space should not be taken up by figures. You can go beyond 6 pages to accommodate figures. I would be happy to take a look at early drafts to give you pointers on how to compose a good write-up. Feel free to email drafts for comment. Guidelines for Class Presentations Your in-class presentations will be somewhat informal. These too will be a collective effort for each team (only one presentation per model project). We will gather around your models and you will describe them in some detail. Also you should have prepared a tutorial on the science behind your system. I want you to have a powerpoint presentation prepared to aid in the discussion. Here is a rough outline ~10 minute powerpoint presentation on your system. Discussing the content your write-up, concentrating mainly on the science (drawing from your write up: section A above). ~10 minutes presenting your model in detail.
