Tenure-Track Position
in Astrophysics
"Due to
cuts in the University's budget necessitated by financial
circumstances in the State of North
Carolina, this search has been
suspended until further notice."
The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications
for a tenure-track position in astrophysics. The search will give some
preference to theory, instrumentation, and infrared or longer wavelength
observation, but excellent candidates in all areas are encouraged to
apply. Existing faculty have active research programs in galaxy evolution
and dynamics, cosmology, stellar populations, compact objects, nuclear and
neutrino astrophysics, general relativity, and instrumentation. The
Research Triangle is a dynamic R&D environment including NC State and Duke Universities,
with NRAO/GBT a few hours drive away. UNC-CH has 60 nights guaranteed per
year on the high-performance 4m SOAR telescope atop Cerro Pachon, Chile, and operates a
state-of-the-art remote observing center.
We are also a partner in the 11-m SALT telescope in South Africa and run a network of robotic
telescopes (the PROMPT rapid response array in Chile and SkyNet
globally). The Goodman Instrumentation Lab built SOAR's
high-throughput facility spectrograph and is working on several other SOAR and
large telescope instrument projects.
Applicants should apply on line by visiting https://s4.its.unc.edu/RAMS4/searchCriteria.do?type=F,
specifying Physics and Astronomy in the Department drop-down list box, and
uploading pdf versions of their cover letter, CV,
publication list, and separate research and teaching statements by January 8,
2009. They must also arrange for four letters of recommendation to arrive by
the same date via email at astrosearch2008@physics.unc.edu and subsequently in hardcopy. UNC is an
equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages women and minority
applicants.
FACULTY POSITION IN
THEORETICAL PHYSICS
DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL
"Due to
cuts in the University's budget necessitated by financial
circumstances in the State of North
Carolina, this search has been
suspended until further notice."
We invite applications for a faculty position in theoretical physics.
Candidates should have demonstrated an excellent record of achievements, have
broad interests and thorough training in theoretical physics in the fields of
cosmology, gravitational physics, particle physics, nuclear physics, or quantum
many-body theory, and have a commitment to high quality research and teaching.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University
of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill is in the process of a multi-year plan to fill several
positions in theoretical physics. These new colleagues will complement our
existing strengths in theoretical physics and be expected to play a major role
in subsequent recruitments. The appointments can be at the tenured or
non-tenured level, depending on the experience and achievements of the
candidates.
Interested applicants are required to apply on line by
visiting https://s4.its.unc.edu/RAMS4/searchCriteria.do?type=F,
specifying Physics and Astronomy in the Department drop-down list box, and
uploading pdf versions of their CV and statements of
research and teaching interests and plans. Candidates must also arrange to have
at least four letters of recommendation sent via email to theory-search-2008@physics.unc.edu
and subsequently in hardcopy. Review of applications will begin on December 15,
2008 and will continue until the position is filled. We particularly encourage
applications from members of under-represented groups. The University of North
Carolina is an equal opportunity employer.
