Astronomical Instrumentation

Gerald Cecil
Work focuses on developing novel prototypes and components for
advanced astronomical instruments. The Goodman Spectrograph for SOAR was
built in the Goodman Laboratory for Astronomical Instrumentation here.
Current efforts are focused on design of advanced volume-phase holographic
gratings for spectroscopy, development of fused fiber hexabundles for
areal spectroscopy, and medical imaging applications.
Physics and Astronomy students from undergraduate majors to graduate students
participate in these activities after training in use of ZEMAX,
SolidWorks, Spice, and other design tools. Clean-room facilities in
Chpamn Hall are used.
