Soarcam movie project

The Soarcam movie project homepage

Updated 2004.04.11

We now have two versions of the movie. The only difference is the image at the end of the movie. Some additional credits have been added. Both movies have a runtime of about 3 minutes.

These movies are in windows media format (wmv). Clicking on the link in internet explorer will launch the viewer and start playing the video. To save to your local hard drive, right click on the link and select Save link target as (or Save link as in Netscape).

The only difference between these movies is the ending image.

Project history:

The goal of the project is to take 4 years worth of images and produce a movie less than three minutes long. The list of files below is a progresssion of edits.

A note about file formats. Unless you want to edit things yourself, you should only download mpeg versions of the movie. The content is the same in each format, and mpegs are smaller and quicker to download. The avi's are actually motion jpeg format which is required for my editing software.

Large files (such as master-01 and the avi's) should be downloaded to the local disk rather than viewed within your browser. To do this, right click on the link and choose the 'Save target as' option.

Description Runtime avi size mpeg size
Master:This movie is simply all the soarcam images sewn together into a very large movie. 42 min 14 sec N/A N/A master-01.mpg 343 MB
First cut: This is a frame-by-frame edit of the raw master. All periods of darkness, inactivity, severe weather and blank images are removed. 3 min 54 sec first_cut.avi 111.4 MB first_cut.mpg 32 MB
Second cut: I edited the first cut based on some feedback from Bruce. The "pier" section is significantly reduced, and the "erector set" section has been edited to make the construction look more linear. Most of the dome construction remains intact. 2 min 31 sec second_cut.avi 73.1 MB second_cut.mpg 20.8 MB
Third cut: The circus tent sundial section is added as well as the lower mount installation (on around 4/4/2002) and the upper mount installation (7/31/2002). In my opinion, the lower mount installation looks pretty bad. It's effectively only one frame. However, the upper mount installation looks pretty cool! 2 min 40 sec N/A N/A third_cut.mpg 21.9 MB

Things left to do:

  1. Add the fourth cut videos to the project history table
