Skynet is a prioritized queue-based scheduling control system for robotic telescopes. Developed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, it allows users to schedule jobs, retrieve data, and monitor telescope activity from anywhere they have an internet connection. Although the driving motivation behind Skynet was to facilitate rapid follow up of gamma ray bursts (GRBs), the system can be used for nearly any type of astronomical observations. The system also enables outreach activity across the state of North Carolina by allowing students in high school and college classes guest access to telescopes in distant locations that have better observing conditions than the American Southeast.
