The Morehead Observatory Telescope

T he SOLAR project is an outreach program of the Morehead Observatory. Middle and high school teachers and their students across North Carolina are studying astronomy using an electronic camera (CCD) mounted on a refracting telescope dedicated to solar observing. Students literally control the Morehead Observatory telescope and camera using either a modem or an Internet connection from their classroom computers. Participants point the telescope and determine exposure times for the camera. Students learn image processing techniques in order to analyze their images. SOLAR activities meet the Competency Goals in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for middle school science, as well as standards for technology and earth and space science as stated in the National Science Education Standards.
