Currently Teaching:
APPL 150, Materials.
Past Courses:
Fall Semester 2008: APPL 160, Statics. For the semester project, I developed a unique design competition based upon right-angle frames in a tug-of-war. Given a standard glue and limited amount of balsa wood material, whose frame would be left standing in an elimination match? See the exciting results.
Spring Semester 2009: APPL 150, Materials. In collaboration with Prof. Dennis I developed a 4-point bending tester project. This involved understanding the elastic modulus vs. type of material (acrylic, cement, and plaster) and thickness of the slab (should that matter?), understanding failure (tensile strength), the use of reinforcements on the top or bottom of the slab, the use of pre-stressed reinforcements, and understanding the shape of the stress-strain curve.
Fall Semester 2009: APPL 160, Statics. This year our design competition still included right-angle frames, but no longer in a tug-of-war configuration. Sand was slowly poured into a bucket until each person's frame collapsed under the weight. However, I only had 95 lbs of sand, and two frames could not be broken even under such a load! See the exciting results.
Spring Semester 2010: APPL 150, Materials. Same project as in 2009.
Fall Semester 2010: APPL 160, Statics. This year our design competition still included right-angle frames, and there were 8 frames that withstood more than 90 lbs! See the exciting results.
Fall Semester 2011: APPL 160, Statics. This year we reverse-engineered a statue at RDU called Triplet.
