Wistful Endings Every journey has a beginning, a middle , and an end. Here we are at the end, sad to be leaving, happy to be going home again, but aware that we will now be homesick wherever we are. Our advice to everyone: go on a long vacation. Even if you have to work, go do it somewhere else. Run away from the two-job, two-car, kiss and run, five-events-per-week insanity. Go away and don't come back until you know how to say no. Say it every day three times. Make it your reflexive answer. Instead of feeling guilty, feel good about the extra time you'll have with your family. Don't come back until you know how to stay home. Ration your gasoline, disconnect the phone on weekends, go home for lunch, and most of all, call the cable company and have them shut off the electronic sewage pipe that spews sludge into your living room 24-7. Life won't wait. One morning too soon your house will be empty of children and you won't have faces to scrub, lunches to make, foreheads to kiss, or tears to wipe. Then you'll only have memories. Don't let them be memories of staring at flickering phosphor. |

Nick Learns to Ski We made a road trip to Santiago because I promised the kids a ski trip. Georgie's parents were visiting there on their way to La Serena too, so Georgie was able to see Santiago with them while we hit the slopes. It was Nick's first ski trip, so he will always be able to brag that he learned to ski in the Andes. He and Rebecca are great for beginners.

Dinner in Santiago There's Grandpa Hector Tamayo enjoying dinner at a fine restaurant with the Clemens family (Grandma Mary took the picture). After seven and one-half weeks, we finally got some paella to eat, though the kids had chicken and french fries, which they know how to order in Spanish by now. |

Goodman Spectograph Did I mention that the spectrograph, whose installation was the purpose of our mission to Chile, works perfectly in all of its tests? Here are Matt, Adam and me with the instrument on the SOAR Nasmyth platform. There is still more to do, but the basic functions are all tested and working. |

House of Sticks When you have no cares this is a fine house. What architectural principle holds it up I cannot say, but Frank Lloyd Wright could not have integrated a structure more naturally into its surroundings than this. It reminds me to store up treasures where the moths cannot eat them, nor time decay. |

End of the Road The journey home jangled the nerves, not the flights, but the airports. The rushing, the beeping and buzzing, and the incessant sound of people talking on cell-phones was hard to take after weeks of peace. It looked like everybody talking to the air instead of each other. I'm sure we'll get used to it again and hardly notice. That's a pity. |
