    The SOAR Telescope

The technology astronomers use to conduct their research sometimes grows into a distraction that displaces astronomy and becomes an end in itself.  In the Goodman Laboratory, we develop technology in the service of science, not for its own sake.

Pulsating Neutron Star Model

Our goal is to study and to solve scientific problems that we find interesting, not because they are popular or headline-grabbing, but because we see in them the potential to revolutionize current understanding. We concentrate on measurements that constrain fundamental physics not measurable in terrestrial laboratories, and especially enjoy working on problems other astronomers regard as already solved.

We believe that building innovative new devices should be an ordinary part of astronomical research.  We are committed to maintaining a program of research and training in astronomical instrumentation.
