Physicist Laurie E. McNeil has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society, an honor that is extended each year to no more than one-half of one percent of the national organization's membership. She was recognized for "numerous contributions towards improving the climate for women in physics."

March 2001

On March 28, 2001, Otto Zhou presented his lecture, "Carbon Nanotechnology:  From Soot to Flat Panel Display" as part of the 2001 Hettleman Lectures at the Carolina Inn.  Dr. Zhou was a winner of the 2000 Phillip and Ruth Hettleman Prize for Artistic and Scholarly Achievement.

Sean Washburn, Lyle V. Jones professor of physics and astronomy, has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), in recognition of his significant contributions in the application of physics to science and technology. This is one of the highest honors bestowed by APS, which is among the nation's oldest and most distinguished scientific societies.
